Major Everton announcement could spell serious trouble for Beto next season - opinion

Beto has ultimately been a revelation since David Moyes came through the door for the second time at Everton.

The Toffees were in desperate need of a revival after their dismal form under Sean Dyche.

Moyes was handed the keys to make the changes needed, and he did so brilliantly, with Everton finishing the campaign strongly in 13th.

Beto was someone who helped the Scotsman achieve this, and his form took an upward trajectory with Beto looking like a ‘menace’.

He was a serious threat under Moyes, and now it’s come out exactly why he was, but this formula could now be found out.

How David Moyes improved Beto at Everton this season

After the 27-year-old was an outcast under Dyche, the striker has found so much joy on Merseyside.

His first season after a £25m move from Torino didn’t go to plan at all, and this season it led to Beto having ‘crazy’ rumours about an exit.

Thankfully, he chose to stay on, and the secret to Moyes’ success with the Guinea-Bissau international has now come to the surface.

Speaking to The Athletic, Moyes’ right-hand man, Billy McKinlay, has said what the Scotsman worked on to improve Beto’s game.

“The manager wanted to utilise Beto’s running power, his physical presence, his threat down the side and behind,” McKinlay said.

“It means playing forward through the lines and through the front, sometimes the most positive passes a player can see.

“We also wanted to help Beto by getting people closer to him. Doucs (Abdoulaye Doucoure) has done that really well. Wide players have then come in and filled the spaces, and we’ve got the full backs forward. So Beto’s probably benefited from another number of small tweaks that he wanted.”

With this clearly working to a tee for Beto during Everton’s success this season, next season might not bode as well for the forward after a recent announcement.

Major announcement could spell trouble for Beto at Everton

With this plan considered, Moyes might have to think of another idea next season.

This is after it was announced that Doucoure would leave Everton, which means Beto won’t have the same man who worked effectively in getting close to him.

Moyes might ultimately have to find a replacement, but if transfer target Liam Delap joins Everton, Beto’s place in the squad will no doubt be lowered in status.

But if this isn’t the case, Moyes will have to rely on Beto’s form again, but Doucoure’s creativity and off-the-ball work will be missed.

Games played 33

Chances created 28

Touches in opposition box 71

Duels won 107

Possession won in final third per 90 0.94

This might not be the last resort however, as McKinlay also made it clear that Beto has suited Moyes’ playing style as a whole anyway.

But significant change will be needed in the absence of Doucoure, as Beto’s joy could soon deteriorate once more at Everton.
