Idrissa Gueye is one of several Everton players who are out of contract this summer.

A decision on the future of the 35-year-old is yet to be made, while the likes of Asmir Begovic, Joao Virginia, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ashley Young are set to leave.

It is a huge summer of transition for David Moyes and Co as they make the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium and there needs to be some continuity heading into the new campaign.

Everton set to agree new Gueye deal

Gueye had been linked with a move to Paris FC upon the expiry of his deal with the Goodison Park outfit, which was set to be 30 June.

However, a report from Foot Mercato journalist Santi Arouna (29 May) claims that the Blues’ hierarchy has offered a new contract to the Senegal international.

It states that the two parties are close to reaching an agreement for the veteran to stay on Merseyside.

Gueye decision is the right one for Everton

Keeping a player with Gueye’s experience is absolutely vital for the Toffees as they head into the new era, as they cannot risk a team that is too young and does not have the crucial know-how to navigate the top-flight.

Not many players know the club as much as the Senegal star does after his two stints on Merseyside and he still has the legs to play regularly in the Premier League despite his age.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star made 37 appearances in the league this season, including 35 starts as he proved to be a pivotal asset to both Moyes and his predecessor Sean Dyche.

The process to find his eventual replacement has already begun, with the Blues linked with the likes of Habib Diarra and Ngal’ayel Mukau from the French league in recent weeks.

The midfield definitely needs some extra athleticism and creativity and it looks like that is going to be addressed in the upcoming window.

However, for now, Gueye is still the heart of the engine room, and if the report is true, he will be for the foreseeable future.
