Anwar Ibrahim has fired a brutal dig at Manchester United

The Malaysian prime minister has brutally warned Manchester United that they could get relegated after their shock post-season defeat. The Red Devils flew to the far east earlier this week for a money-spinning tour.

United took on an ASEAN All-Stars team on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur - a game that ended in a 1-0 defeat. A number of the 72,000-capacity crowd let their feelings be known with loud jeers at the final whistle.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was in the crowd at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium and has now fired a brutal dig towards the nation’s illustrious visitors. Writing on Facebook, he said: "Oh no!

“Manchester United failed to win a trophy again. Looks like you guys are going to have a 'headache' next season. Hopefully you don't get relegated to the Championship.”

United finished a dismal 15th in the Premier League in their most recent season having lost an eye-watering 18 games throughout the campaign. But in the end, they were still 17 points clear of the drop zone.

Amorim’s side also missed the chance to return to the Champions League after losing the Europa League final to Spurs. Speaking out on the boos that his side received in Malaysia, Amorim admitted it could actually end up helping them in the long-term.

He said: "I feel always guilty. I said that in the last game. I am always guilty of the performance of the team no matter and since I am here in the first day, I am guilty.

"Then the boos from the fans, I think it's something that we need maybe because every game that we lost in the Premier League they were always there (cheering us). So, it's like the way of playing. If they see that it's not working, they will change the way they behave.

"But I felt then when we finished and we walk away, like every time, the supporters were with us. Let's wait for the next season."

Man United will be back in action on Friday as they take on Hong Kong. The Red Devils also have a few pre-season friendlies to look forward to ahead of next term.

They are already set to take on Premier League rivals Leeds, West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton. United will also take on Fiorentina shortly before the 2025/26 campaign gets underway.
