Dublin Airport brilliantly troll Chelsea following their Conference League victory

Dublin Airport couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at Chelsea following their European Conference League success.

Enzo Maresca’s side beat Real Betis 4-1 in Poland on Wednesday evening, with Cole Palmer being crowned Man of the Match.

A second half comeback sparked wild scenes on the pitch at the full-time whistle, just days after Chelsea cemented their Champions League campaign ahead of next season.

Palmer led the celebrations on the field as the players danced and paraded the trophy in front of their travelling fans.

The competition itself has been the subject of ridicule due to its status compared with other European tournaments.

Chelsea beat teams such as Noah, Heidenheim, Astana and Shamrock Rovers on their way to the final.

Therefore, Dublin Airport’s social media team identified a perfect opportunity to share their view on the Conference League.

Alongside an image of Chelsea’s players celebrating, they wrote the caption: “Celebrating winning the Conference League = clapping when the plane lands.”

Their followers certainly enjoyed the tweet. One replied ‘brilliant’, another said ‘made my day’ while others just left a series of laughing emojis.

It was only just over a week ago when they spotted an opportunity to poke fun at Manchester United.

A Europa League final defeat, on the back of an embarrassing performance in the Premier League, Dublin Airport were happy to kick them while they were down.

Alongside an image of an empty airport terminal, they wrote the caption: “Irish Manchester United fans heading to Champions League games next season.”

Europa League Conference win just a starting point

While many are barely batting an eyelid over Chelsea’s title success, manager Maresca is happy to use it as a starting point to build a winning mentality.

Chelsea have a young squad, averaging just 23-years-old, and Maresca believes the taste of success will only provide further motivation going forward.

After the game, he said: “Hopefully it can be a starting point to build a winner mentality.

“You need to win games, you need to win competitions. And for sure, the trophy we won tonight is going to make us better.

“I’m very proud about the path or the journey we have done in the Premier League.

“But for me, it’s the most difficult competition in the world. You have to be consistent in 38 games. And these players, they showed.

“That’s why after Nottingham Forest, my outburst was a little bit exaggerated. But the reason why is just because in 38 games, you need to be consistent. And with the youngest squad in the history of the Premier League, it’s something unbelievable.”
