Important Spurs offseason dates San Antonio fans need to know

There's a lot to look forward to for Spurs fans. The guys won 12 more games than they did the previous season, going from 22-60 to 36-46, despite immense adversity. Gregg Popovich had a health issue that ultimately cost him his spot on the sidelines. He goes down as the greatest coach this sport has ever seen, and if you disagree, you can debate a wall.

Mitch Johnson is in control now, and fans should be elated. Johnson is just the latest student to graduate from Coach Pop University. He has many branches spread throughout the league, and many of them are doing very well. We should expect the same from Mitch.

Having a successful inaugural year for Coach Johnson will involve having a strong offseason. Here are some key dates Spurs Nation should circle on their calendars (do people still use physical calendars?) or set reminders on their phones or whatever.

The Spurs will be active this offseason

This is the NBA's worst-kept secret. Everyone knows that this is the summer of San Antonio. It's been reported ad nauseam. So, the end of the Finals, whether it's a sweep or it goes seven, will be interesting to keep our eyes on.

As Josh Paredes highlighted, the Spurs' free agents are Chris Paul, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Charles Bassey, Jordan McLaughlin, and Bismack Biyombo, along with the fringe guys we never see anyway: David Duke Jr., Harrison Ingram, and Riley Minix.

San Antonio [could renounce CP3's rights](https://airalamo.com/chris-paul-stab-spurs-fans-back-again-rumors-true) and waive the other rotational pieces to free up space. They can trade Devin Vassell and/or Keldon Johnson's contract. They could even trade Harrison Barnes' contract—something I'm not a fan of, considering the team needs his shooting. But much of it begins once the NBA Finals are over.

The NBA Draft on June 25th will be a huge day for the Silver and Black. We'll know for sure [which direction Brian Wright and El Jefe are steering](https://airalamo.com/dylan-harper-cam-johnson-spurs-best-both-worlds) the ship. Until the selection is made, trades are still on the table.

Free agency begins on June 30th. Another potentially massive time for the Spurs. There aren't any superstars on the market, but there will be some top-tier role players available.

The next important dates will be the summer league dates recently announced. It will give fans their first chance to see their draft picks in action. Hopefully, we'll be rational when we watch. There have been too many summer league stars who struggled when the regular season rolled around. It will just be nice to see the players get some run. If you love hoops, you want to see players play basketball.

San Antonio will participate in the California Classic and the 2K Summer League, giving fans plenty of chances to see their young players in action. After that, we wait for De'Aaron Fox to sign his extension, and later comes the start of training camp.

It will blow by before you know it. We're already less than a month from the draft. Let the countdown to the future begin.
