Stricken Leicester City star sets return date in big boost to new-season hopes

Abdul Fatawu’s sights remain set on a pre-season return with the Leicester City winger desperate to “fight for the badge” again.

The Ghanaian tore his ACL on international duty last November to rule him out for the season in what was a huge blow to City’s survival fight.

But the 21-year-old has been making a quick recovery and was back out on the grass doing light ball work this month.

Posting a video from Seagrave on Thursday, Fatawu said he was now signing off for the summer but hopes to be able to join his team-mates when pre-season begins.

City’s non-internationals are due back on June 30, giving them six weeks to prepare for the first Championship game of the season.

“Just finished my last session of the season,” Fatawu said. “I’ve been working so hard.

“My rehab has been so good. The people, the physios, the management, the players, everyone has been so supportive to me.

“By God’s grace, I’ll be ready before the pre-season. I can’t wait to get started again, to be back on the field, fighting for the badge as always. I can’t wait to see the fans again. It’s been a while.”

Fatawu managed to play 13 games in all competitions before his injury, setting up two goals, in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham and the 3-2 win at Southampton.

On as a sub against the Saints, Fatawu changed the game, and that earned him a run of starts up to his injury.

His raw pace and directness were big assets for City, and it’s something Ruud van Nistelrooy rued not having. He’d hoped to sign a quick winger in the January window.

When Fatawu, he will be part of a competitive group out wide. As things stand, City also have Stephy Mavididi, Kasey McAteer, Will Alves, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, and up-and-comers Jeremy Monga and Jake Evans to choose from next term.
