Phoenix Suns head coaching candidate to join Latvian national team staff

Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott will join the Latvian national team’s coaching staff for the 2025 EuroBasket.

The Latvian national basketball team will welcome a new addition to its coaching staff for the upcoming 2025 EuroBasket, which will be hosted in front of home fans in Riga.

Head coach Luca Banchi announced that Jordan Ott, currently an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, will join Latvia's coaching team for the tournament.

"I’m proud to announce an important addition of Jordan Ott. American coach with NBA experience, will be joining us," Banchi revealed in an interview with Basket.lv.

"I’ve known him for nearly 10 years, since he was a young coach fresh out of university working in the Atlanta Hawks system."

"Since then, Jordan has had the opportunity to work with top NBA specialists in Atlanta, the Brooklyn Nets, the LA Lakers, and now the Cleveland Cavaliers, who were one of the top NBA programs this year," he noted.

"Jordan has shown great enthusiasm and a desire to be part of our coaching team, to take part in this fantastic journey," Banchi said.

"He doesn’t have experience in European basketball, but he’s worked with European-minded professionals like Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson, who, as you may recall, was an assistant coach for France’s national team during the Paris Olympics."

"Jordan’s vision of basketball aligns with our style of play, and I’m confident he can make a significant contribution to Latvian basketball—both for players and coaches—and help take our game to the next level," he added.

Banchi also mentioned that Ott is expected to join the Latvian squad following the conclusion of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, where he is likely to serve as head coach of the Cavaliers.

"It’s important for him to be involved and feel part of our process, so we’re in constant contact," Banchi said.

"I’ve introduced Jordan to my colleagues, and we’re exchanging materials and information. In July, he might serve as head coach of the Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League, but after that, he’ll join us."

However, reports indicate that Ott is also among the top five candidates for the Phoenix Suns head coaching job, which could impact his availability for the Latvian national team this summer.

At EuroBasket 2025, which begins on August 27, Latvia will play both the group and preliminary stage matches at home. In Group A, they are set to face Turkiye, Estonia, Serbia, Czechia, and Portugal.
