Julian Alvarez transfer twist emerges that could potentially thwart Liverpool

Arsenal has reportedly entered the race to sign Atletico Madrid's star striker Julian Alvarez, who recently dropped the biggest hint over his future yet, potentially thwarting Liverpool's ambitions.

Alvarez, a key player in Manchester City's 2022/23 treble-winning squad and a World Cup winner with Argentina, moved to Spain last year in an £82 million ($110 million) deal. Since becoming a regular starter for Atletico Madrid, he has netted 29 goals and provided six assists.

Given his impressive performances, it's no surprise that rumors are swirling about a potential return to England, particularly with the newly-crowned champions. Liverpool's interest stems from uncertainty over Darwin Nunez and the future of the No. 9 shirt at Anfield and comments made by Alvarez's agent in March suggesting the Reds were interested before his move to La Liga.

However, according to the Spanish publication Marca, Arsenal, who finished second in the Premier League, is now the 'strongest bidder' for the Argentine. The Gunners are known to be on the hunt for new attacking talent as they aim to challenge Arne Slot's side next season.

Adding to the competition, La Liga winners Barcelona is also said to be interested in Alvarez, although their pursuit may be delayed due to other priorities this summer. Alvarez boasts an impressive goal-scoring record, making him a highly sought-after player.

Atletico Madrid, in particular, recognizes his value and is in no rush to sell, given that the 25-year-old is tied to the club until June 2030.

According to Fabrizio Romano, writing for GIVEMESPORT: "Atletico Madrid absolutely want to keep Julian. There's interest from Premier League, it's true for sure but Atléti insist on keeping him."
