Benfica hold talks with Manchester United for their goalkeeper

Manchester United’s pre-season has already sparked speculation over potential arrivals, especially between the sticks.

Andre Onana’s dismal campaign has cast serious doubt over his future at Old Trafford, and United’s search for a long-term upgrade has intensified.

Ruben Amorim is reportedly unimpressed with the Cameroonian’s erratic displays, especially in key fixtures where his errors proved costly.

With a limited summer budget due to missing out on Champions League football, United must now carefully navigate the transfer market.

Goalkeeper targets have ranged from veterans like Emi Martinez to younger talents with high resale value.

One name that continues to dominate United’s radar is Anatoliy Trubin.

According to The Mirror, the 23-year-old Benfica shot-stopper is being monitored closely by both Manchester United and Manchester City, with both clubs eager to reinforce their goalkeeping departments.

Anatoliy Trubin has a $100 million release clause in his contract, but sources suggest Benfica would be willing to negotiate a deal closer to $40 million.

Had United won the Europa League final against Tottenham, Trubin may already have been in line for a summer move, but their failure to secure Champions League qualification has made the finances trickier.

Manchester City, on the other hand, have been in discussions with Benfica for some time and are believed to be advancing their interest.

A source close to the situation told Mirror US Sports that Trubin’s absence from Benfica’s squad in the Taca de Portugal final could indicate an imminent departure.

“It looked like Manchester United would be signing him, but missing out on the Champions League complicates things,” the source revealed.

“Manchester City is also very, very interested in signing him. Talks have been held with offers being made.”

Trubin, Ukraine’s current number one with 19 senior caps, has already racked up 59 league appearances for Benfica since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023.

At just 23, he fits the profile of a modern keeper: composed, confident with his feet, and dominant in his area.

If United want to secure his services, they may need to act fast — and hope the blue side of Manchester doesn’t beat them to it.
