Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has been named Liga Portugal's player of the season amid continued links to Manchester United this summer.
The Swedish international was always the heavy favourite for the award having enjoyed a stupendous season in Lisbon. After winning the league on the final day of the season ahead of fierce rivals Benfica, Gyokeres ended the campaign with a whopping 39 goals in 33 appearances.
However, it was not just Liga Portugal where the former Coventry City man was excelling. He scored 54 goals in total across all competitions including six in eight Champions League matches.
Unsurprisingly, Gyokeres was comfortably crowned the player of the season in Liga Portugal, an accolade he shared with his 2.8m Instagram followers. Such sensational form has led the striker, who turns 27 on Wednesday, to be heavily linked with a number of Premier League clubs.
United have been one of the teams to find themselves linked with the striker and were believed to be in a good position having poached Ruben Amorim from Sporting in November. However, the Reds' lack of Champions League football next season has meant the club's transfer plans have been reined in.
Arsenal have also held a strong, long-term interest in Gyokeres and with Champions League football secured, Mikel Arteta's team are expected to make a move for the striker. Their new sporting director Andrea Berta is also thought to be a fan of the Swede.
On Wednesday, a report from The Guardian claimed that Sporting had told interested clubs that Gyokeres will be available for no less than £67m. They added that Arsenal are likely to test their resolve soon with the transfer window opening on Sunday, June 1.
United may struggle to pay £67m for Gyokeres without ensuring sales are agreed first. Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha is expected to be their first signing of the summer with his £62.5m release clause set to be triggered.
