Emi Martinez has taken to social media to thank Aston Villa fans for their support this season.
The goalkeeper has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in recent weeks and didn’t help Villa's cause on Sunday when he was sent off in the first half of the Champions League decider against Manchester United.
Martinez had made several important saves before making the wrong decision to floor Rasmus Hojlund following a sloppy back pass from Matty Cash.
Down to 10 men, Villa were on the back foot at the start of the second half too, but should have taken the lead when Morgan Rogers put the ball in the back of the net.
A significant refereeing error by Thomas Bramall meant Villa were denied the lead before Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen won the game for United.
Many expect that Martinez has played his last game for Villa, after he cried at the end of the club’s final home game of the season against Tottenham earlier this month.
Martinez has interest from the Saudi Pro League, but reports claim that he is not willing to leave European football at this stage of his career.
Atletico Madrid also hold a firm interest in Martinez but would have to find a new club for Jan Oblak before pushing for the Villa ‘keeper.
In what is his first social media post since Sunday’s defeat at Old Trafford, Martinez posted a series of pictures from the campaign alongside a caption.
“3rd consecutive European football,” Martinez wrote. “Not what we wanted but that shows how far we have come as a club. The fans were amazing as always, thank you! #UTV.”
