Amad Diallo was subject to serious personal abuse in Malaysia
Amad was left 'very upset' after he was the target of serious personal abuse from a Manchester United fan in Malaysia. A photo of the Ivorian went viral following United's 1-0 defeat against the ASEAN All-Star team.
The image showed Amad putting his middle finger up as the United players were walking back to the team bus. Suggestions had emerged online that it was linked to his name and desire for people not to use 'Diallo'.
However, according to the Daily Mail, it's reported that the real reason behind Amad's remark was down to serious personal abuse sent in his direction. Although the exact nature of the exchange has not been revealed, Amad has been left in distress and not pleased after the incident.
It has, meanwhile, been stressed that the abuse against Amad was not racism. The former Sunderland loanee was later pictured performing the same gesture with Alejandro Garnacho, but that gesture was more playful.
Manchester Evening News chief football writer Samuel Luckhurst said: "I hadn't seen it as it's so minor but some online fans appear to be unhappy with Amad after his gesture towards some fans when he was leaving the United team hotel in Kuala Lumpur. We have been informed he received some abuse on his departure and reacted to it."
The incident involving Amad and the United fan came a matter of minutes after Ruben Amorim's side were beaten 1-0 against the ASEAN All-Star team in Kualar Lumpar. Maung Maung Lwin, a Burmese winger for Thai League 1 club Lamphun Warriors, scored the winner in the 71st minute.
It was the first of two matches for United on a post-season tour. Next, the Reds face Hong Kong on Friday and Amorim was asked about the club's trip to South East Asia in his pre-match press conference.
Amorim said: "I think everybody understands that it is a really hard context because we had the season that we had. It is hard in these moments to face the fans around the world.
"We want to finish this season, but we also want to give something to the fans. I think it is clear that it is really tough for us in this moment not to close the season.
"But one thing that is really important is that we need to face our fans. Amad is trying to explain, but we were not really focused in the last game and everyone can feel it.
"We just want to turn the page and improve in the next season."
Amad was part of Amorim's press conference and added: "We are here to give them [the fans] joy and time. We want to make sure they enjoy everything. We try to play every game more focused, like the manager said. The most important thing is to give them joy. If we give them joy, we are really happy with that."
