Thierry Henry Says Arsenal Should Sign £81.5m Striker Who Is "One Of My Favourite Nines"

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has said that he thinks the Gunners should sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez this summer.

The Gunners are out to sign a striker during the transfer window, and they are linked to several top number nines. As things stand, they look most likely to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, with a price of £59m touted for the Sweden international.

Arsenal have also been linked to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko alongside Chelsea, but at the moment, it seems that they are prioritising a move for Gyokeres.

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry however, has said that he thinks Arsenal should go after Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez. He said whilst speaking on the Overlap Stick to Football podcast: “One of my favourite nines out there at the minute is Julian Alvarez. We’ve been talking about it, putting pressure, playing alone, low, whatever you want to do. Did you see the free-kick he scored the other day?”

“He can hold the ball alone, he played at the Olympic Games, he played in the Copa America. I don’t hear him saying, ‘I’m tired’ or not tired. Hopefully nothing bad is going to happen to him. He’s played everything and the way he plays, I just like him.”

Arsenal have been linked to Alvarez, who moved to Madrid for a fee of £81.5m from Manchester City last summer. However, it is unlikely that the Spanish side will be willing to sell the Argentine after one season with the club. This season, Alvarez has scored 24 goals and provided five assists for Atletico this season.

Henry blames Arteta for Arsenal not signing a striker

The Gunners have faced a lot of criticism for not signing a striker, with many led to believing that it is why they failed to win the Premier League title in favour of Liverpool.

Henry says that Arteta had a massive failing by not signing a striker, and that he had ample opportunity to do it. “When you look at the injuries and you look at the players that came, he brought players. He got [Raheem] Sterling when everyone wanted a nine. He had time to get a nine.

“I’m not the coach, I don’t know how the discussion (went)… everyone has been screaming for a nine – apart from when we win, by the way. When we beat Real Madrid, we didn’t need a nine.”
