Report: 'Exceptional' £45m player almost left Liverpool last year and could now go this summer instead

Arne Slot is seemingly gearing up for a massive summer of change at Liverpool, with many first-team players already being linked with moves away.

Of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future has already been sealed with his move to Real Madrid now just a matter of when, not if.

Others, such as Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, have also found themselves of interest to clubs across the world, with Nunez most recently being linked with a Saudi Arabia switch.

And, if Liverpool want to remain competitive and retain their Premier League title next season, sales will have to be made for Slot to boost his war chest that little bit more to get all his targets over the line.

Liverpool are ‘unlikely’ to stand in the way of a Joe Gomez exit in the summer

Joe Gomez is a player who feels like he’s been with Liverpool forever.

The defender has played across the back four for the Anfield outfit since his arrival and has been an indispensable member of the squad at times.

However, as per a report from David Lynch, Liverpool would be ‘unlikely’ to stand in the way of Gomez if he wanted to exit Anfield in the summer.

The report adds that the defender himself would be ‘open’ to a move to a team such as Newcastle, whom he was linked to last season.

Liverpool have set a price tag of around £45million to prise the defender away from their squad, but it ‘remains to be seen’ whether any of the interested parties will shell out that sort of fee.

Liverpool should let Joe Gomez go in the summer

As mentioned, the Anfield outfit are set for a rather busy summer with several of their first-team players already being linked with moves away.

On the face of things, Gomez seems like the ideal back-up for the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, with the Englishman even being able to fill in at full-back if needed.

However, due to his injury history and his lack of reliability, now seems to be the right time for Liverpool to cash in, even if Ray Houghton did call Gomez “exceptional” for his performance against Brighton in November.

Jarell Quansah could also be on the way out, with Borussia Dortmund showing an interest in the young centre-back.

And, while a transfer away for either of them would make a lot of sense, Liverpool need to keep hold of at least one so they have sufficient cover for Van Dijk and Konate.

In addition, due to Quansah’s age, he has plenty more room to grow and, in reality, would be a better investment for Liverpool’s future.

Hence why Liverpool should let Gomez go, while they still have a chance.
