The transfer window will soon open and silly season will commence for Newcastle United.
Having qualified for the Champions League, Newcastle United will almost certainly be linked with an awful lot of players.
The club have been unable to make a first-team signing since the summer of 2023, largely because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Now, the club are expected to be busy this summer. Eddie Howe wants Newcastle to sign targets quickly, having gone so long without a major signing at St James’ Park.
There is a limit, however. Newcastle could spend £150million this summer but that does not mean supporters will start to see some of the most established stars in the world arrive.
While Newcastle are confident they are in a strong PSR position, it’s hard to imagine owners PIF straying from their transfer strategy just yet. They are yet to make a superstar signing, preferring to focus on younger players who can develop instead.
Which makes claims from the Italian press truly baffling.

Newcastle United linked with Rodrygo and Ferran Torres
According to Tutto Juve, Newcastle want to spend more than £167million this summer.

They surprisingly claim Real Madrid star Rodrygo is on their radar, along with Ferran Torres of Barcelona and Real Sociedad defender Jon Aramburu.
There’s bound to be a lot of surprising Newcastle transfer news this summer but it’s hard to imagine many reports suggesting they could actually move for a player of such profile as Rodrygo.
They also claim Juventus hope that expenditure means Newcastle have to sell Sandro Tonali. In that event, the Turin giants hope offering either Douglas Luiz or Dusan Vlahovic would help land the midfielder.
What Eddie Howe has said about Newcastle United signing ‘world class’ player this summer
There’s little doubt Rodrygo would be a statement signing for Newcastle. Regarded as one of the best forwards in the world, he’s been one of Madrid’s key players during their recent dominance in the Champions League.
Actually landing him, however, feels almost impossible. The report appears to be tipping Newcastle to spend such huge money that they’d need to cash in on Tonali, which just doesn’t feel likely.
Newcastle don’t have to sell their best players this summer, while Howe has revealed they simply cannot go out and sign established stars such as Rodrygo.
Speaking at his post-match press conference after the Everton game, Howe said: “If he’s already established, I think the wages and the financial package becomes difficult for us, speaking honestly.”
