Leeds United could utilise historic relationship with PL club to strike important transfer

Leeds United and Tottenham have swapped players several times since relegation from the Premier League, and this summer could see more of the same.

Daniel Farke and Leeds had to call upon Premier League loans during their time in the Championship, and no club were more receptive to Elland Road offers than Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou sanctioned loans for Joe Rodon and Djed Spence in 23/24, before allowing the permanent sale of the centre-back in 24/25, while Manor Solomon then joined on loan to help the side to the league title – as Archie Gray headed in the other direction for £40million.

Leeds United interested in Tottenham defender Ben Davies

A report from the Daily Mail claims that Leeds are keeping tabs on the situation pertaining to Spurs left-sided defender Ben Davies this summer.

The Wales international is out of contract at the end of June, but is expected to agree to a one-year extension in his contract.

However, that extension appears to only be planned so that Daniel Levy can cash in and get a fee for the versatile defender, with Spurs open to offers after qualifying for the Champions League through winning the Europa League.

Davies was previously a target for Leeds during the January 2024 transfer window, and could be a more viable option now that Premier League football is on offer and his Spurs contract is 18 months further down the line.

Leeds United may have to take advantage of Spurs connection to secure Ben Davies transfer

Leeds’ connection with Spurs in transfers either way came via Angus Kinnear’s relationship with Daniel Levy, according to The Athletic.

While the CEO is now at Everton and Leeds may not be able to specifically tap into that personal connection our former executive had with the Spurs decision-maker, the proof of Leeds’ success with Spurs signings is there for all to see.

Spence is the outlier, but with Rodon becoming a huge hit at Leeds and Solomon’s stock raised hugely after a loan at Elland Road, the North London club may be even more willing to do business with Leeds for outbound players like Davies.

Now that Champions League football is on offer at Spurs, they might see Davies surplus to requirements, while Leeds could certainly do with someone of his experience and Premier League expertise.

Add to that the Welsh connection and it looks an obvious signing for Leeds to be considering.
