Former Eagles QB Already Getting Outplayed in OTAs With New Team

[The Philadelphia Eagles](https://section215.com/traded-eagle-brings-even-more-drama-to-new-team-with-ota-absence-01jwbyp2mftp) opted to move on from Kenny Pickett this offseason, trusting a trio of Kyle McCord, Tanner McKee, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson to compete for the backup role behind quarterback Jalen Hurts. With how often Hurts has gritted through injuries in his career, it isn't likely a position to be called on.

Having a cheaper option that likely matches Pickett's upside is the right call for the franchise. If early results from Cleveland's OTAs tell us anything, it is further confirmation that the team made the right decision.

Pickett finished with the worst day among Browns quarterbacks, being outplayed by Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel. It is an interesting group the Browns assembled, attempting to replace an injured Deshaun Watson. Pickett is unquestionably at the bottom of the offseason rankings, but has been given a shot to work his way back into a meaningful role. A chance the quarterback isn't making the most of in the early going.

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Kenny Pickett is Proving Philly's Decision to Move on was the Right One

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pickett missed seven passes and was the only Cleveland quarterback not to throw a touchdown. On the flip side, Gabriel, Flacco, and Sanders all combined for 6 touchdown passes and had notably higher completion rates. This is yet further confirmation of what the Pittsburgh Steelers and now the Eagles already know.

The Steelers drafted Pickett in an awful quarterback class, far higher than the QB's talent suggested was wise. His short starting tenure in Pittsburgh and stints in the Philly lineup showed that the quarterback's absolute ceiling is that of a high-end backup.

For the Eagles, it is a small sample size, but added in with the year of reps in a Philly uniform, the franchise knows the answer. Pickett isn't a starting quarterback in this league and is going to have to show growth to continue to hold onto a backup role.

The Eagles' opting to move on allows the team to work on development projects and perhaps find a surprise backup behind Hurts. It was a wise decision to move on from Pickett and save much-needed cap space as the team prepares to defend its 2024 Super Bowl win.
