Spurs may have given Arsenal helping hand to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres could finally be heading to Arsenal this summer.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for the Swedish striker in the last summer transfer window, but did not get a deal over the line with Sporting CP demanding that the frontman's €100million release clause was met.

However, after standing firm on that release clause last summer, the Portuguese giants softened their stance and there are reports that the club and the player have an agreement that he can leave this summer if a club comes in and offers at least €65million (£54.7million) to sign him.

Gyokeres is one of the hottest strikers in world football right now. The Swede scored an astonishing 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions this season, with 13 assists for good measure too. That adds to the 43 goals and 15 assists he got in 50 games last season.

He is prolific and added goals in the UEFA Champions League to his burgeoning resume this season too, after many had questioned whether his strike rate in the Portuguese league could stack up at the very top level.

Arsenal are not the only club interested in signing the 26-year-old this summer, with a number of other clubs across Europe keen on making a move.

One of those rivals were thought to be Manchester United. Ruben Amorim is now at Old Trafford having been Gyokeres' manager at Sporting CP earlier this season.

United were fully expected to make a move for the striker this summer, to team up once more with Amorim. But Arsenal may now have the edge, thanks to north London rivals Tottenham.

United were beaten in the Europa League final by Spurs last week, thus meaning they will not play in Europe next season. Arsenal, having finished second in the Premier League, can offer Gyokeres Champions League football, which United cannot.

It could be just the edge Arsenal need to complete a £55million move.
