Newcastle United are preparing for a high-spending summer with a transfer budget that could exceed £250 million, according to a report from i News’ Mark Douglas.
The Magpies are expected to complete at least one, and potentially two, striker signings depending on the outcome of Alexander Isak’s situation and his potential sale.
No matter what, Newcastle have already made a sales pitch to Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap pending his final decision, while Brighton’s Joao Pedro is also a serious target.
Douglas reports that “part of Newcastle’s proposal is that... the Magpies want to evolve their system” to accommodate new tactical demands in the Champions League next season, potentially playing Isak alongside another forward.
The club is also expected to prioritise a right-sided forward and a centre-back, described by Douglas as “non-negotiable” additions.
In addition to those soon-to-be-bolstered positions, younger and developmental players are being pursued in line with Newcastle’s longer-term blueprint. The aim, Douglas writes, is still to “bring in the best younger players with potential to develop them,” rather than chase marquee names like Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.
With roughly £100 million in PSR headroom, Newcastle are ready to “pounce when the transfer market opens for a short 10-day window on 1 June,” Douglas reported.
The earliest business announcement could feature the signing of Malaga winger Antonio Cordero, who has already been widely reported as completed, while Villa’s Jacob Ramsey also remains on the club’s radar.
