‘I still expect’: £50m winger is more likely to sign for Arsenal than Anthony Gordon – journalist

This upcoming transfer window is absolutely crucial for Arsenal.

The Gunners have plenty of work to do this summer, and reinforcements in the attack are at the top of the agenda.

Arsenal will sign a striker this summer, and they’re also in the market for a new left winger.

Rafael Leao has been linked to Arsenal, while Anthony Gordon’s name has cropped up as an option.

Writing in his column for Caught Offside, Charles Watts has been discussing Arsenal’s search for a new winger, and he’s addressed the links to Gordon, claiming that Nico Williams is more likely to sign for Arsenal than the Newcastle star.

Nico Williams more likely to join Arsenal than Anthony Gordon

Watts shared what he knows about Arsenal’s search for a new winger.

The journalist says that Gordon isn’t likely to leave Newcastle, claiming that he’d expect a move for Nico Williams to be much more likely amid his £50m release clause.

“The prospect of Gordon or any of their star players leaving now looks to be very slim,” Watts wrote.

“I couldn’t really see him heading to Arsenal anyway. Nico Williams has always been the club’s priority target when it comes to the left side of the attack and if they do make a move to strengthen in that area then I still expect the Athletic Bilbao winger to be the man they go after.”

Nico Williams compared to Anthony Gordon

Arsenal are more likely to sign Williams than Gordon, but the Gunners may be barking up the wrong tree here.

Yes, Williams was excellent at the Euros last summer, but he’s had an underwhelming domestic campaign, and the stats show it.

29 Games 34

5 Goals 6

5 Assists 5

Yes, Gordon’s numbers haven’t been brilliant this season, but last year, he had 10 goals and 11 assists, and he’s proven in the Premier League.

Of course, getting a player such as Gordon away from a rival club like Newcastle won’t be easy, but, this is exactly the sort of signing that would take Arsenal to the next level.

Williams is more likely to join Arsenal, but Gordon may well be the better option.
