The California Classic has been a staple of Sacramento summers in recent years, as the Sacramento Kings have hosted a two- to three-day event that provides basketball fans with a breath of fresh air as they await the start of the regular season.
This summer, however, Golden 1 Center’s doors will remain closed as the Kings sit out this year’s Classic.
Sacramento was not listed on this year’s list of teams participating in the 2025 California Classic at Chase Center in San Francisco, as the Golden State Warriors will host the event this year.
Joining the Warriors from July 5th through 8th at Chase Center will be the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat.

Will the California Classic return to Sacramento in 2026?
While the news of Sacramento’s absence from this year’s California Classic is disappointing, the event is expected to return to the Golden 1 Center in 2026.
Carmichael Dave announced on his show this morning that, according to league sources, the event will alternate between Chase Center and Golden 1 Center going forward–2025 in San Francisco, 2026 in Sacramento, and so on.
The Kings don’t have a first-round pick in June 25th’s NBA Draft, which could have also added to the Kings’ decision to sit out of the event entirely–but then again, Dave says that the Lakers, Heat, and Spurs confirmed their status before Sacramento, meaning they would have to find another team to play in the California Classic to participate.
Instead, the Kings will only play Summer League games in Las Vegas (July 10-20th), where their lone 2025 draft pick (42nd overall selection) will take the hardwood with Sacramento for the first time.

Brett Siegel of Clutch Points joined The Allen Stiles Show on Wednesday to discuss the recent rumors surrounding Sacramento Kings guard DeMar DeRozan and the potential market around the league for the veteran scorer.
As reported by multiple sources in recent weeks, new Kings general manager Scott Perry is expected to shop DeRozan around the league.
Will he have to combine draft picks with the future Hall of Famer to get valuable returns?
Plus, there’s a clear need for a point guard, so maybe they can accomplish two things in one move. Watch for the Miami Heat as a potential partner.
Reports also say that the Kings have an interest in Boston’s Jrue Holiday and Toronto’s RJ Barrett.
Brett and Allen broke it all down on Wednesday’s show.
