And Merseyside Police have now named the alleged suspect as Paul Doyle - a married 53-year-old and local businessman.

Chief crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Mersey-Cheshire, Sarah Hammond, issued a reminder that 'the investigation is at an early stage' as they pore over 'a huge volume of evidence'.

"It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve," Hammond added.

Speaking on Thursday, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police insisted detectives are 'working tirelessly' to get to the bottom of the horrific incident.

"Merseyside Police is determined to gather as much evidence as possible to ensure that every avenue is explored," Sims said.

"Now that Paul Doyle has been charged, we ask that the judicial process be allowed to continue without any speculation online or elsewhere that could impede the pursuit of justice for all those affected."

Sims also confirmed the 79 people who were injured at the parade remain in constant contact with Merseyside Police officers and staff, with seven still in hospital.

The age of the victims ranged from nine to 78 years old.

"This continues to be a large and complex investigation and detectives are reviewing a huge volume of CCTV and mobile phone footage submitted by the public and businesses, as well as footage from our own body worn cameras and dashcams," Sims added.

"We are extremely grateful for the ongoing cooperation of the public who have, and continue to, share their footage and witness accounts with detectives. Their input is vital to our ongoing enquiries."

The incident occurred at around 6pm on a day which saw Reds fans take to the city's streets to celebrate the club's 20th league title.

Thousands of Liverpool fans were in attendance at the parade with councillor John Hughes estimating in excess of one million people were attending, surpassing the 750,000 present for the 2019 Champions League parade.

Footage circulating online appeared to show the vehicle speed up as it veered into pedestrians on both sides of a crowded Water Street, which was about a mile before the parade's end point.
