The Red Sox pulled out a rare combination of roster moves on Tuesday.
Boston signed free agent relief pitcher Jorge Juan to a minor league contract, assigned him to Double-A Portland, then placed him on the club’s suspended list due to a “prior three-game suspension he had to serve from his previous organization for on-field actions,” according to SoxProspects’ Brendan Campbell.
I’ve never seen those words put together in that order before, but there’s a first time for everything.
Juan, 26, was released by the Atlanta Braves earlier this month after posting a 5.11 ERA with 53 strikeouts and 28 walks over 34 relief appearances at Double-A in 2024, then logged a 7.50 ERA with 11 strikeouts and six walks in seven appearances between Low-A and Double-A to begin 2025. The Braves cut the right-hander after he threw behind a batter and was ejected from his final game in Double-A Columbus on May 10.
It’s highly unlikely we see the 6-foot-8 hurler debut any time soon in Boston, but he does have the tools to eventually work his way up in the system. Juan could make his debut for the organization as early as Friday.
