The San Francisco 49ers would prefer to have nothing to do with All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey returning to the NFC West this season despite all kinds of rumors surfacing about the Miami Dolphins looking to trade him.
Of course, the likeliest of suitors is the Los Angeles Rams, Ramsey's previous team where he regularly was a thorn in the Niners' side at least twice a year.
Those rumors heated up recently when Ramsey began something of a "final countdown" ahead of the June 1 threshold where salary-cap benefits would go into effect following a move of its kind.
If San Francisco fans are uneasy about such a transaction, Rams head coach Sean McVay is doing his best to alleviate the concern, even if that's not necessarily his intent.
Sean McVay pours water on Jalen Ramsey-to-Rams rumors
Speaking to reporters from L.A.'s OTA workout sessions, McVay more or less said there's nothing going on between Los Angeles and Miami when it comes to a would-be deal for the 30-year-old defensive back.
"There’s not a whole lot that I have to offer," McVay said, via Pro Football Talk. "There’s a lot of layers with something of that magnitude when you’re talking about the caliber of the player; the compensation that they’re looking for in return. What does that look like?"
This also jived with what Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shared, suggesting "zero has changed" despite the cornerback's apparent trade request on social media.
"Obviously, we love Jalen. We love Jalen intimately," McVay added. "There would be some things that we would need to be able to do if that was going to be a direction that we went. We certainly haven’t closed the door on that, but there hasn’t been any meaningful, tangible dialogue as of late. But that can always change pretty quickly, as you know."
In summary, McVay is saying that something could happen, but it isn't happening yet.
The 49ers, meanwhile, have to view the Rams as one of the chief threats to the NFC West crown, meaning any chance for a division rival to improve has to be met with some level of concern.
If McVay is pouring proverbial water on those rumors, Niners fans should breathe a little easier.
