Man United are looking to add more attacking talent this summer as they aim to bring in goal scorers.
However, United are likely to sell Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, amongst others, and so will need to bring in more attacking talent to replace the pair, especially Garnacho, who scored 10 goals in all competitions this season for the Red Devils.
Mbeumo wanted by Newcastle
As the Red Devils look to bring in the Cameroon international, they may have competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle, who reportedly want to sign him this summer to play alongside Alexander Isak.
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle have emerged as major contenders to sign Mbeumo, with Brentford reportedly valuing him at around £50m, a fee that the Magpies are willing to pay.
This is a major blow in United’s pursuit of Mbeumo, as not only do Newcastle have more money to spend this summer, they also have the lure of Champions League football, something that the Red Devils can’t offer to Mbeumo.
Furthermore, the promise that the 25-year-old can play alongside Isak in Eddie Howe’s attack must also be a significant lure for Mbeumo, who is used to having a good partnership with a striker after playing with Yoane Wissa and first Ivan Toney at Brentford.
The Bees’ manager, Thomas Frank, is all but resigned to losing Mbeumo this summer, despite the fact that he wants him to stay at the Gtech Community Stadium. He said: “He is at his best age, he has scored 20 goals. I would like to keep him, but we are a selling club, so if someone comes in with the right price..."
Seeing as they have already set the £50m price tag, Brentford would likely accept that offer if Newcastle or Man United were to come in and bid for the winger.
Who could Man United sign instead?
If they are unable to persuade Mbeumo to join over Newcastle, Man United will have to look at alternative targets to add in attack this summer to replace the likes of Rashford and Garnacho.
Arsenal are also said to be interested in Lookman, however, they are likely to prioritise other targets such as Viktor Gyokeres, Nico Williams and Rodrygo in attack, meaning that Lookman could be available to United.
