Toure made 17 appearances in all competitions in his single campaign as a Celtic player in the 2016/17 season, before becoming a technical assistant to Rodgers in 2017. He left the club in 2019 alongside Rodgers to join Leicester, before taking up the vacant managerial position at Wigan Athletic in 2022.
He was dismissed after just nine games in charge of the Latics, with the former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool defender failing to win a single match in charge of the club.
His reported competitor for the role, Lijnders, was previously a coach at Liverpool under both Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, though he has spent time in the Netherlands and Austria as a manager of NEC and Red Bull Salzburg in 2018 and 2024, respectively.
