Newcastle never stood a chance with Matheus Cunha after what’s come out of Man United - opinion

The transfer window is not officially open, yet Newcastle United are already missing out on some major targets.

Dean Huijsen is joining Real Madrid despite interest from the Magpies, with Los Blancos activating his £50million release clause.

Liam Delap is snubbing Newcastle United in favour of a move to Chelsea, where he is more likely to be a regular starter.

Newcastle have also shown an interest in Matheus Cunha, but he is going elsewhere as well. Cunha is going to sign for Manchester United instead of Eddie Howe’s side, with the Red Devils activating his £62.5million release clause.

How much Matheus Cunha will earn at Manchester United

A deal to take Cunha from Molineux to Old Trafford is almost finalised, and details about the move make it clear exactly why the Magpies were never going to be able to strike a deal.

According to the Telegraph, Cunha is going to earn £200,000-a-week at Manchester United.

If he were to earn those wages at St James’ Park, he would be Newcastle United’s highest-paid player.

There had been concerns that Manchester United could blow the Magpies out of the water in terms of wages, and it would appear those concerns have become reality.

While Newcastle thought Bruno Guimaraes could help bring Cunha in, the bigger problem was the financial package that Man United could offer.

Newcastle United set for Alexander Isak contract talks

Newcastle United are willing to break their wage structure this summer, but not on Cunha.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle want Alexander Isak to be their highest-paid player, as they prepare to offer the 25-year-old a contract extension.

Newcastle are confident that Isak will sign, but that will depend on how much money is offered to him.

Having relentlessly hyped Isak up as one of the best strikers in world football, Newcastle United must pay him as such.

That means a deal worth at least £200,000-a-week, which is more than anyone has ever earned at St James’ Park.

As Newcastle United continue to grow, so must their wage bill to retain these world class players.
