The NBA Draft will take place on June 25 and 26, and while the San Antonio Spurs do have a second-round selection, most fans are expected to tune in only on day one to see who the Spurs select with the second and 14th picks.
Behind Cooper Flagg, Rutgers' standout Dylan Harper is the second-best prospect on the board by far, and the Spurs are expected to select him. However, between their lack of frontcourt depth and elite shooting, the Spurs have plenty of needs (and options!) with the 14th pick.
The Spurs could trade the selection for an established center or shooter, although they likely won't reveal their plan until draft day.
Think about it for a second. If high-level big men like Derik Queen or Khaman Maluach are still on the board when the Spurs are called for the second time, why would they trade the pick for a backup center?
If Kon Knueppel or Alex Karaban are on the board, why would the Spurs trade for an older shooter? However, if the best player available is a point guard like Walter Clayton Jr. or another redundant--albeit talented--youngster, then the Spurs will likely trade the selection.
While all eyes are on the Spurs possibly trading the second pick for a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo, building organically through the draft, especially when they have a top pick, seems more in line with the Spurs' history and values.
