Chiefs' Mahomes Announces Major Decision on 2028 Olympics

A recent report suggested that Patrick Mahomes would likely want in on competing at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The recent report - per the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback's own words - appear to be wrong.

The 2028 Summer Olympics are set to take place in Los Angeles and flag football is coming to the Games. And the NFL announced earlier this month that players will likely be allowed to compete in the 2028 Summer Games.

Sounds like fun.

And according to NFL insider Jeff Darlington, there was a good chance Mahomes wants in.

"Talking to Patrick Mahomes about it, for instance, I think there will be players that want the gold medal. It adds something to a resume," Darlington said on the This Is Football podcast with Kevin Clark.

"Mahomes, I think, wants to do it."

Oops.

Mahomes, who will be 32 years old in the summer of 2028, this week said that he plans on skipping the Summer Olympics.

“I’ll probably leave that to the younger guys,'' he said.

Mahomes is arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, and is also maybe its most creative. That would make him a fine choice to lead the team.

But with all due respect to flag football ...

Maybe it's better than Mahomes concentrates on the real thing?

Mahomes, who has won three Super Bowls, is understandably trying for a ring in the NFL, not an Olympic gold medal for flag football. ... in a sport in which, by the way, the U.S. cannot possibly lose.

Now that NFL owners have voted to allow players to compete in flag football at the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, there will be intrigue and there will be competition.

It's a 12-player roster and it's a 5-on-5 format. It will be fun ... again ... except for all the other teams from all the other countries.

The NFL, by the way, isn't doing this for fun. They are working to grow the sport's popularity internationally.

In other words, it's about money.

And that's fine, too.

But it won't be much of a competition - think of the NBA 1992 "Dream Team'' in the Olympics - and maybe Mahomes doesn't need the thrill of "dunking on Angola'' here.
