Sky Sports has provided an update on the coaching future of Steven Gerrard.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder has been without a job since leaving his last post at Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq earlier this year.
Gerrard’s tenure as manager of Ettifaq concluded in January 2025 after 18 months marked by fluctuating fortunes.
The former Liverpool youth coach’s departure from the club was finalised on January 30, 2025, through a mutual agreement with the club.
At the time of his exit, the Dammam-based side sat 12th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League, just five points above the relegation zone.
Since departing Saudi Arabia, Gerrard has been linked to several Championship and lower-league roles -from Derby County to Carlisle United.
He was also recently linked with a move to Premier League side Southampton, while a return to Scottish Premiership side Rangers was also mooted.
Gerrard was said to have held advanced talks over a return to Ibrox as head coach. The former England international led the club to its historic 55th Scottish Premiership title in 2021 and was tipped for a sensational return to the Scottish giants.
However, Sky Sports is now reporting that Gerrard will not return as manager of Rangers.
“Steven Gerrard will not become the next Rangers manager,” Sky Sports said.
“The former Ibrox boss did hold talks over a return to the club, three and a half years after leaving Glasgow.
“However, it is believed he was not a front-runner for the job and is no longer among the options being assessed.
“Rangers are still considering various options, including Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin, as they weigh up who should permanently replace Philippe Clement.”
With Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga said to be on his way to Ajax, some Liverpool fans are suggesting Gerrard should replace him in Arne Slot’s coaching set-up.
However, it appears the Liverpool legend is not keen on returning to management soon.
Recently speaking on his coaching future, the Liverpool legend admitted that he wants to take a breather from the coaching role:
“I will go in at some point but when it’s round the clocks, I’ve doing it 18, 19 months, I want to be free, I want to play a round of golf, go down the boozer and have a couple of beers, do normal things that you can’t do when you’re coaching,” he said.
“I’m happy with waking up and being free, doing the family stuff, just being free away from stress.”
