Patrick Mahomes’ Career Decision Turns Heads During Chiefs OTAs

As the Kansas City Chiefs concluded their third day of voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) on Thursday, quarterback Patrick Mahomes tackled a huge topic about the future of his football career.

At 29 years old, Mahomes has already solidified himself as an NFL great. Entering his ninth season with the Chiefs, he won two NFL MVP awards and three Lombardi Trophies, while appearing in the Super Bowl in five of his seven seasons as a starter.

When it was announced that flag football would be an official event in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, many wondered whether or not Mahomes would be interested in competing. His decision on the matter, revealed in Thursday's media availability, generated plenty of conversation.

In 2024, the Kansas City signal caller admitted he wanted to compete in flag football, but questioned whether his skillset would translate to the 7-on-7 game, especially compared to more mobile quarterbacks.

He also previously expressed hesitation about being in his early 30s by the time 2028 rolls around — a concern he reiterated this week.

"I'll probably leave (flag football) to the younger guys," Mahomes said during Chiefs OTAs. "I'll be a little older by the time that comes around."

"Smart move," responded one fan on X, satisfied with the decision.

"He knows he’s not the best option for QB for the USA team," one user claimed.

"Translation: 'there is not a chance in (expletive) the front office would let me do that,'" joked a reply.

"He’s got too much on the line to be risking injury for flag football," said one rational response.

Whether it was up to Mahomes or not, the decision would appear to be good news for Kansas City fans, who do not want to see their star player risk injury at the Olympics.

At the start of the Los Angeles games, Mahomes would have four years left on his contract, though there is a potential out after the 2027 NFL season.
