NFL analyst identifies the Packers' best offseason move (and it's not who you think)

Now that the offseason is slowing to a crawl, it's time for The Content Machine to start pumping out retrospectives. A lot's happened over the last few months, and what better to talk about when there's nothing to talk about than ... all of it! At once! If that sounds exhausting, it's only because it is – but someone's gotta do it.

And I'm not going to do it, but that's okay because [The Athletic _will._](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6388467/2025/05/29/nfl-offseason-draft-free-agency-2025/) And I can just see what they say and agree! (Or disagree, I guess, but they generally know what they're talking about.) The fine folks over there took a look at every move of every NFL team this offseason and decided to pick one that they especially liked. It's like a listicle, but with the NY Times' budget behind it. And I'm glad they did it, because their Packers answer is legitimately an interesting choice that could, potentially, tie into one (1) in-person conversation I have with someone this weekend.

The Athletic really loved the Nate Hobbs move, in case Packers fans were wondering

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Before adding flash in the draft with first-round receiver Matthew Golden, the Packers focused on adding toughness in free agency with guard Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs. Hobbs also brings versatility through his ability to play the nickel role. Both project as hard-nosed players and welcomed additions to the NFL’s youngest roster."

So is it Golden? Or Hobbs? Or Banks? Or everyone? The phrasing's kinda confusing, but I'm going to assume they're talking about Hobbs, just for the sake of this exercise. Putting aside whatever's going on with the team and Jaire Alexander, their defense could depserately use some secondary help this season. Hobbs flew under the radar last season – Raiders players tend to do that – but he'll be a legitimate upgrade in Green Bay this season.

His durability will be especially appreciated – in four years out in Las Vegas, Hobbs appeared in 51 games and started 38 of them. In a perfect world, you'd like to see some more plays on the ball, but his coverage grades are fine and it's not like beggars can be choosers. The move looks even better if Alexander does end up playing in Green Bay this season, which now feels pretty likely? And while I love this choice, it's a shame how outdated it'll feel once the Packers trade for Trey Hendrickson.
