Charlie Mulgrew has urged Greg Taylor to stay at Celtic and scrap it out with Kieran Tierney for the left-back role.
And the former Hoops defender is sure it won’t be a formality who comes out on top.
Celtic are set to welcome Tierney back after agreeing a pre-contract following his five years at Arsenal.
Boss Brendan Rodgers hasn’t given up hope in keeping Taylor despite the 27-year-old set to become a free agent after running down his Parkhead deal.
Mulgrew said: “As a Celtic fan I would love to see Greg stick around.
"He does that inverted role brilliantly and between him and Tierney they can still have enough games between them over a season.
“It’s unrealistic to play every single game at Celtic because there’s 60 games in a season so there’s plenty there for the two of them.
"You imagine KT will be looking to stay fit but you don’t know how realistic that is.

“He’s probably not going to play 60 games at the level so I’d love to see Greg Taylor stay because he offers a lot for the changing room.
"Tierney will still need that competition to know that he’s not just going to be there every game.
“Greg would provide that perfectly and he’s got the determination and attitude to be in the team.
"He’ll want to fight to be in there and you just never know, Taylor could get the jersey.
"Football’s a funny game sometimes.”
