The Philadelphia Eagles are inching closer to the start of their championship defense, but that has been overshadowed by a contract dispute with one of the veterans on their roster.
Veteran defensive end Bryce Huff was absent from Tuesday's OTAs in Philadelphia, and it looks like this isn't the only offseason workout the highly-paid veteran has skipped since the Eagles laid claim to another Super Bowl title.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the former Memphis Tigers standout has not taken part in a single one of Philadelphia's voluntary workouts since they began in the spring. Considering that Huff's contract for the 2025 season is guaranteed for just over $16.7 million, the bulk of the leverage is in the hands of the player and not the front office.
Considering these workouts are voluntary, nothing is forcing Huff to be present as the franchise cannot fine him for being away from the team at this time. Given the way his contract is structured, Huff being away from the practice field could be a good thing for the Eagles, as the front office can ensure they keep the defender healthy while working to find a trade partner to take on Huff's deal.
If Howie Roseman can find another team willing to do business with Philadelphia's front office, then Huff's absence could be the best thing for both sides, as the Eagles will receive some salary cap relief by trading him after June 1.
The writing appears to be on the wall. Huff isn't long for Philadelphia as his tenure with the Eagles has not lived up to the expectations placed on him after signing a three-year, $51 million contract. We'll have to wait and see what Roseman and the rest of the brain trust in Philly can cook up.
