The Chicago Bears signed only 11 undrafted free agents this year, which is lower than the league average. Most of this was likely due to having a roster already filled with young talent they liked. GM Ryan Poles wasn’t focused on combing the landscape for hidden gems. He instead focused on trying to find some capable players at key positions. One thing is certain. Undrafted players always get a real chance to not only make the team but also play. These aren’t false opportunities. Jack Sanborn and Tyson Bagent were recent examples.
As always, the key is finding ways to show the coaching staff you belong. For fans, that usually comes during preseason games. However, practice is just as important. The Bears haven’t hit training camp yet. Pads don’t go on for another two months. Still, every day of drills is an opportunity to show what you can do. One undrafted rookie took that to heart. [Jahdae Walker](https://twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/1928187976539906397) is a wide receiver from Texas A&M who signed with the team after the draft. He just made a play in OTAs that defies description.
Walker never gave up on it. He kept a clear head, having the presence of mind to know the ball didn’t hit the ground and the concentration to bring it back in. The time of year doesn’t matter. That is an incredible play and one coaches are certain to file away in the archives for later. Walker needs every boost he can get if he wants to make the roster. Chicago is loaded at wide receiver with D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, and Luther Burden at the top. You assume Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay are also getting spots as well, leaving only one left for Walker to fight for. He was a decent player in college, having a strong season at Grand Valley State in 2022 before transferring to A&M, where he served as a rotational guy. He has solid speed and some YAC ability. Maybe the Bears unlock something his college coaches couldn’t.
