Leicester City could be set for a six-point deduction after breaching Premier League rules.

Everton and Leicester both looked at one point as though they would be relegated from the Premier League, though when David Moyes arrived on Merseyside, things changed for the better, at least for the former.

As for the Foxes, their fate was obvious from the minute they achieved promotion, and that is a showcase of just how difficult it is to bridge the gap between the Championship and the Premier League.

Teams coming up have to tread the PSR line very carefully, and a failure to do so on Leicester’s behalf could have some consequences going forward.

Everton’s 2022 financial accounts imply Leicester punishment

Everton’s finances over the last few years have been far from great, though ever since TFG assumed control on Merseyside, the books are starting to look far more balanced, with concerns fading away.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

However, in the financial year ending in 2022, the Toffees were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules, which resulted in an immediate six-point deduction.

Finance expert Stefan Borson, in a post on X, shared the similarities between accounts from Everton and those of Leicester, who have been charged over an alleged breach of £17m from the 2021-24 period.

Premier League sides are allowed to record losses of a certain amount before restrictions are imposed, with Everton’s in 21/22 amounting to an Upper Loss Threshold set at £19.5m, which resulted in a six-point deduction.

That, compared to Leicester City’s, is a much higher percentage, which Borson claims is why the Foxes will likely receive a similar punishment.

Everton must tread carefully this summer

PSR can be very unforgiving in the Premier League, and without the right measures in place, teams can come dangerously close to breaching it, which has major implications going forward.

Investment is needed this summer if Everton are to progress, but it must be done so in accordance with the Premier League rules.

With that said, if Everton can move on some of their fringe players, the room for manoeuvrability becomes much larger.
