Newcastle United and Manchester City with offers for same player – Decision on the way

Manchester City have joined Newcastle United, Barcelona and other clubs in the race to sign Espanyol star Joan García in the summer window, according to multiple claims from Spain.

Friday’s edition of [Mundo Deportivo](https://mundodeportivo.com/) states Manchester City have entered the chase for the 24-year-old ‘in the last few hours’.

The Citizens join a list that features clubs including Newcastle, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli and Inter Milan.

Despite Manchester City, Newcastle and others being in the picture, sources close to the stopper state Barcelona are in pole position.

On Thursday afternoon, García and his family met his agent, Juanma López, and started evaluating several options he has on the table. Mundo state both the player and his agent appreciate Barca’s efforts to try and secure his services.

The La Liga winners sent him a five-year contract offer that includes a salary appropriate to his performances this season. He’ll make a decision on his future in the coming days.

[Cope](https://www.cope.es/programas/el-partidazo-de-cope/noticias/joan-garcia-tres-ofertas-espana-dos-premier-league-20250529_3160322.html) has a report on the Espanyol star and their title says he has ‘three offers’; one from Spain and two from England. Within the report, only Manchester City and Newcastle are mentioned.

Journalist Juanma Castaño reports on the Premier League duo and Barca’s interest on El Partidazo de Cope. He also explains when García will decide his next destination.

_“At the moment, it hasn’t been decided which team García will go to,”_ he said.

_“Even he doesn’t know, so I’m surprised when it’s published that he has already decided, that it’s done with this or another team, or categorically it’s said that he’s not going to play for a certain team._

_“Quique Iglesias already knows, he’s very clear, he says that he’s almost certain that he won’t play for Barca. I’m not so sure that he won’t be at Barca._

_“There are three teams that want Joan García: two are from the Premier League and one is from La Liga. At the moment there are no more. I think the teams are Newcastle, Manchester City and Barcelona; and the decision will be at the beginning of next week._

_“If he does go to Barca as a first-choice goalkeeper, it is clear that his chances of winning titles and also of being a goalkeeper for the Spanish national team, something that is in Joan García’s mind, will increase a lot.”_

García has a €25m release clause which the interested parties need to activate to take him away from Espanyol.
