Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has insisted that defender Leny Yoro has a promising future ahead of him after a challenging first season at Old Trafford.

Yoro was seen as a coup for United last summer when he joined the club from Lille. In France, the tall centre-back had already earned himself comparisons with Raphael Varane.

At one point, it looked like he could also follow in the footsteps of his fellow countryman as Real Madrid showed interest in his services. However, United managed to fend off their interest and commit him to a five-year deal.

Unfortunately for the teenager, his start at Old Trafford was dampened when he picked up a serious ankle injury against Arsenal in pre-season. This setback ensured that his Premier League debut did not come until December against the same opposition at the Emirates Stadium.

Since then, the defender has managed to avoid any major injury setbacks and became a regular for Amorim in the fixtures that mattered. From the quarter-finals onwards, Yoro played every minute of the Europa League.

After ultimately suffering defeat in his first European final, Yoro took to Instagram on Thursday to reflect on the season. "Obstacles. Tears. Lessons. Growth," he wrote.

"Thank you for always being there." A number of his United teammates supported him with Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee and Diogo Dalot among those to like the post but it was the captain's comment that stood out.

Replying, the Portuguese midfielder penned: "This is just the beginning of something for your future." Such a sentiment will be echoed by plenty of the Old Trafford faithful after seeing plenty of promise from Yoro this season.

The supporters will also hope that Fernandes will be there for the early stages of Yoro's United career. He has been heavily linked with Al Hilal and the Saudi Pro League club reportedly offered him a £700,000 per week ultimatum.

The catch being that they wanted him to commit to the deal by this Thursday. However, that deadline has since passed and there has been no reports that Fernandes has agreed to the personal terms.
