**Liverpool**‘s chase for Julian Alvarez has taken a turn. As per Marca, Arsenal are now in first position for the Atletico Madrid striker.
The 23-year-old was instrumental in Manchester City’s treble glory in the 2022/23 season. And he was part of the Argentina squad which celebrated ultimate glory at the World Cup in 2022 too. He then moved to La Liga for £82 million in the summer.
The 25-year-old has been on fire in an Atletico since making the move. He managed to score 29 goals and register six assists. His form has caught the eye of several top clubs for this June window. And Arsenal are now being tipped as the strongest for his signature. The Gunners are desperate to add firepower up front. They see Alvarez as the ideal fit to boost their title chances next season.
Atletico Unlikely to Sell Despite Interest
While Liverpool and Arsenal both eye the prolific forward, Atletico Madrid are in no rush to sell. The Spanish giants see their star as a core part of their setup and have him tied down until June 2030. With no release clause forcing their hand, Atleti are holding firm on their asset.
Reds’ interest stems from uncertainty around Darwin Nunez. And a possibly a change in their No.9 role under new manager Arne Slot. Back in March, Alvarez’s agent even admitted there was previous contact with the PL champions before his move to Spain.
But now, with Barcelona also showing future interest, the competition is heating up. Despite the buzz, any move for Alvarez will depend on a major shift. It will be either from Atletico’s side or a record-breaking bid from a club willing to splash big cash.
