The Pittsburgh Steelers are engaged in preliminary trade talks with multiple teams to add a playmaker to pair with DK Metcalf, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports.
Schultz’s report follows rumors that the Steelers are interested in landing Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith.
Smith wants a reworked contract. He is scheduled to make $4.8 million this season but would like to increase that number. If the Steelers did land Smith, it would come with a new deal. Schefter says Smith would like to stay in Miami.
Sources told PennLive that two weeks ago, the Steelers had also made a preliminary call to the New Orleans Saints about wide receiver Chris Olave.
General manager Omar Khan has kept an open line of communication with teams and said that if something makes sense, the Steelers will at least consider making that move.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes the team is not done adding to their wide receiver room.
Rapoport says he would be surprised if the Steelers are not in the market for another player, and they will likely sign someone that is still a free agent.
“I would be surprised if the Steelers are done at the wide receiver position,” Rapoport said on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.” “They are likely to at least sign one more and there are a couple of talented wide receivers still on the market.”
The top free agents include the recently released Gabe Davis, Amari Cooper, a multiple-time Pro Bowler, Keenan Allen, D.J. Chark, and some other intriguing options on the trade market.
Pittsburgh is back in a similar position to where they were a year ago. This time, they have DK Metcalf as their alpha wide receiver instead of Pickens. Along with Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods, and Roman Wilson, those four players likely round out the top four on the depth chart for the Steelers.
