Dan Ashworth is expected to propose Eddie Howe as his choice to succeed Thomas Tuchel as England manager following the 2026 World Cup, according to [The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-14715483/Newcastle-new-badge-crest-transfer-news.html).
Ashworth, now the FA’s chief football officer, will play a central role in identifying Tuchel’s successor alongside chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott.
Although Tuchel could extend his tenure if England performs well in the United States World Cup, a succession plan is already being considered by the former Magpies executive.
Hope reports that Ashworth had previously recommended Howe as a managerial candidate during his brief tenure at Manchester United. Despite speculation that their relationship may have soured amid Ashworth’s contentious exit from Newcastle, the two still have mutual respect and could soon join forces.
Howe, 47, appreciated Ashworth’s measured approach at St James’ Park and his decision not to overhaul systems that were already functioning effectively. While the former sporting director was never part of Howe’s inner circle, his communication skills and ability to offer balanced input were valued.
Newcastle may now face renewed interest in Howe if Ashworth leads the process of replacing Tuchel. The Magpies boss was linked with the England job last summer but has publicly expressed a preference to remain in the day-to-day rhythms of club football.
Nonetheless, Hope indicates that Ashworth’s appointment virtually ensures Howe will be contacted once the FA turns its attention to long-term planning beyond 2026.
