Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 25-year-old’s future.
Eddie Howe has been a long-term admirer of the Cameroon international and is prepared to upgrade on Jacob Murphy ahead of their return to the Champions League.
As things stand, the only sticking point is whether they are prepared to meet Brentford’s asking price as they aim to beat rivals to the deal.
This comes after Football Insider revealed in February that Newcastle could sign Mbeumo for around £50million when the window opens.
Meanwhile, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle could sell players before signing Mbeumo as they aim to raise the funds.

Newcastle race Man United to sign Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo
Brown told Football Insider on 22 May that Man United are pushing to sign Mbeumo and plan to hold preliminary talks over a deal with Brentford.
Ruben Amorim’s side are prepared to rival Newcastle’s interest, but he has been a long-term target at St James’ Park and they plan to beat other clubs to his signature.
O’Rourke explained that the Magpies’ ability to offer him Champions League football has given them the edge and they will be “doing all they can” to reach an agreement.
“The Newcastle recruitment team have identified Mbeumo,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s been linked with a move for a long time now, over the last couple of transfer windows, and he could be a perfect fit for that right-sided forward role.
“Jacob Murphy has done a good job with lots of goals and lots of assists, he’s built up a good relationship with Alexander Isak as well.
“But if Newcastle are going to compete for silverware on a regular basis, they have to improve the squad.
“Mbeumo would definitely improve the starting XI at St James’ Park.
“Newcastle have Champions League football to look forward to next season, and Mbeumo will add to his options and would be a smart pick up.
“It’s just whether they can get a fee agreed with Brentford, they’re looking at around £50-60million.
“Man United are very much pushing to agree a deal for Mbeumo, so Newcastle will be pulling out all the stops to try and get this wrapped up.
“Newcastle will be hoping their offer of Champions League football will give them the edge.
“He’s been a long-term target for Eddie Howe and Newcastle will be doing all they can to persuade Mbeumo to make the move to St James’ Park.”

Mohammed Kudus update emerges at West Ham
Alongside Mbeumo, Howe’s side are also eyeing alternative options in the right-wing position as it has become their priority ahead of the transfer window.
Football Insider revealed on 28 May that Newcastle want to sign West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus and are keeping a close eye on his situation at the London Stadium.
The Ghana international has a £75million release clause in his current contract, but it is believed a deal could be done for below that price tag.
Brown told Football Insider on 20 May that West Ham will accept offers for Kudus as Graham Potter is prepared to let him leave this summer.
