Aston Villa could go all out to bring Manchester City star Jack Grealish back to Villa Park in what would be one of the transfers of the summer.

The Villans saw their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League dashed on Sunday (25 May) after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Morgan Rogers thought he had given Villa the lead after going down to 10 men, but his goal was wrongfully disallowed by referee Thomas Bramall, who adjudged Rogers to have kicked the ball from Altay Bayindir’s hands.

Now, Rogers has made headlines once more, with the 22-year-old thought to be the focal point of discussions between Villa and City for Grealish, who has been linked with a return to Birmingham.

Rogers could be involved in an exchange deal for Grealish

Grealish signed for Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a historic £100million transfer fee.

However, it has been widely reported that Pep Guardiola’s side could allow Grealish to leave this summer, and ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes Rogers, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City, could be the man who makes his return possible.

“Grealish is still a hero at Aston Villa,” King said.

“He always will be. I would have thought an interesting scenario would be Grealish plus money to Villa in exchange for Rogers to Manchester City. I would have thought that would be the kind of deal which would have been discussed if there is going to be a deal.

Rogers has been solid for Villa this season

“I’m sure Grealish would want to go back to where he was brought up. Whether Villa would be prepared to let a player of Rogers’ quality go is something else.

“However, I’m sure Villa would have a chance to sign Grealish without Rogers going the other way. It would be a completely reduced fee, that is for sure. It could be a loan for a year with an option to buy. Grealish needs to play football, and he isn’t doing that at the moment.”

Villa need to move on from Grealish

While supporters have fond memories of Grealish’s time at the Birmingham club, that is all they should remain: as fond, but distant memories.

When the Englishman departed for Manchester, he was expected to become one of the Premier League’s best. However, four years later and he has not only failed to live up to the expectations placed on him, but the idea of Grealish seems better than what the player has to offer.

Despite not securing Champions League football this season, Villa are moving in the right direction and cannot be derailed by old sentiments.
