The biggest points deductions in English football as Leicester City face double-figure punishment

Leicester City could be hit with a big points deduction on their return to the Championship.

Leicester City suffered relegation during the 2024/25 season, spending just one year back in the Premier League.

Club icon Jamie Vardy is now set to leave the Foxes at the end of June when his contract expires.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future as Leicester manager remains very much in doubt as well, now the campaign has come to a close.

Meanwhile, after escaping two sets of charges in recent times, the Midlands outfit are once again facing a possible points deduction.

Leicester City facing 12+ points deduction

In May, the club were charged by the Premier League with an alleged breach of profit and sustainability rules in relation to the 2023/24 season.

At the time, we spoke to finance expert Adam Williams regarding possible punishments for Leicester.

He told us: “Given that their alleged breach appears to be in a similar ballpark to Everton’s, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a similar points deduction that they go for, especially given that Leicester are also charged with not providing their accounts on time and failing to give their full assistance to the Premier League.”

Now, iNews have reported this week that Leicester are facing being docked a minimum of 12 points if they are found guilty of their latest charges.

Such a heavy deduction would surely kill the club’s chances of being promoted in 2025/26.

Biggest points deductions in English football history

Now, with a double-figure punishment potentially heading the Foxes’ way, we have taken a look back at the top-five highest points deductions in English football.

Leeds United began 2007/08 in League One with a 15-point deduction after failing to comply with the EFL’s rules on insolvency

A year later, Bournemouth began 2008/09 on -17 points in League Two after suffering relegation during the previous season.

Remarkably, in the same campaign and same division, Rotherham United were also docked 17 points by the EFL.

The most recent event on this list came in 2021/22, when Derby County were hit with a whopping 21-point deduction.

Meanwhile, the biggest points deduction in English football history was in 2008/09 and saw Luton Town docked a total of 30 points for two separate charges.

The EFL took away 10 points for making illegal payments to agents before a further 20-point deduction for leaving administration without a Company Voluntary Agreement in order to be allowed in the League.
