Of all the coaches on the New York Jets staff this season, the one man under the most pressure (outside of head coach Aaron Glenn) is offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
As the former passing game coordinator of the Detroit Lions, Engstrand has been a part of some successful offenses in recent years. Now as a play-caller, the 42-year-old coach has to find a system that works for different players - and arguably lesser players - compared to the ones he had in the Motor City.
That's fine according to him, though. To start things off, the Jets want to have the right systems in place so players understand what is needed of them.
And those characteristics are the same ones every team in the league is gunning for.
"I think we just want to play fast, right? We want to be physical," Engstrand said. "We want to be aggressive. We want to be explosive. We want to be detailed. We want that to show up on tape each and every week."
That's five goals. Trite and cliche? Maybe.
But that doesn't make them untrue.
It will be interesting to see how Engstrand is able to build an offensive philosophy around an athletic quarterback like Justin Fields compared to what he did with the Lions' Jared Goff over the last few years.
If he can get Fields to play like a solid quarterback (or at least better than he has played in recent years), Engstrand could be the next top name to watch in head coaching cycles.
If not, there's a good chance his lone opportunity to be a play-caller will end in a failure.
