What Sean Longstaff has already realised about his Newcastle United future as Leeds and Everton …

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has already made a clear demand to Eddie Howe amid speculation he could leave the club this summer.

The academy graduate has seen his minutes reduced significantly this season following Sandro Tonali’s return from suspension in August 2024. Now 27, Sean Longstaff has been reduced to a handful of appearances from the bench.

Reports have stated that Longstaff is unhappy at Newcastle United and could look to head for the exit this summer to find more game time elsewhere.

Longstaff is wanted by Leeds United and Everton this summer, with the midfielder valued at around £10m. Newcastle would receive pure profit from any deal for Longstaff due to the fact that he came out of their academy.

Any hope of minutes at Newcastle seems to be very distant for Longstaff. Eddie Howe thinks Newcastle’s midfield is very strong, with Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton the preferred three in the middle when they are all available.

As his future on Tyneside looks bleak, Longstaff has already commented on transfer speculation, and it does not sound good.

Sean Longstaff knows his Newcastle United career could soon end

Longstaff is one of several players who could leave Newcastle this summer, with the futures of Callum Wilson and Matt Targett also looking like they will be away from the club next season.

The midfielder was on the pitch at full-time at St James’ Park following Newcastle’s defeat to Everton, but he was kept on the bench for the entirety of the game, and did not get a chance to change the game.

With his future at Newcastle also looking bleak for the entirety of the season, Longstaff was asked about his future by iNews last November.

“Yeah, if it’s here [Newcastle] it’s great. If it’s not, it’s not,” he said.

“I want to be valued as a player, I want to be appreciated as a player and whether it’s here great. If it’s not here and it’s somewhere else, it’ll be somewhere else.

“In a way I live day to day, game to game and I just try and take in every game. I get to go to work every day and spend it with my best friends, I don’t know what’s coming ahead.

“I don’t know what’s coming down the line, I just try to embrace every day and enjoy every minute because ultimately it won’t last forever.”

Longstaff made 25 Premier League appearances this season and played a big part in the Magpies’ historic Carabao Cup win in March.

Sean Longstaff given lifeline at Newcastle United

As Newcastle enter the next phase of the new era, fresh arrivals are expected and longstanding players are expected to leave.

However, Longstaff could still be of tremendous use to Newcastle, despite his lack of minutes this season.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the season, despite the loss to Everton. The Magpies are currently in a sticky situation with UEFA’s squad registration rules. They must have at least four “club-trained” players in their squad, and failure to do so would mean they lose places.

As it stands, Longstaff is the only club-trained player at Newcastle, so Howe could look to keep him at the club to help them with their squad registration.

There are several club-trained players at other clubs at the moment, with the likes of Fraser Forster and Tim Krul potential options if Longstaff does decide to leave.
