Browns QB Shedeur Sanders’ Roster Spot in Jeopardy Per Insider

The talk surrounding the Cleveland Browns usually revolves around their quarterback situation and the upcoming competition in training camp and preseason action. Shedeur Sanders is usually at the forefront of those discussions.

Since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders has become one of the most popular players in the league. He's receiving a ton of hype, but there is a brutal reality that very few talk about.

Sanders is facing an uphill battle to find playing time. He's also in a battle to simply make the roster.

While talking about Sanders and his future with the Browns, NFL insider James Palmer was completely honest with his thoughts about the matter.

"Fifth round picks are not a lock to make the roster, so no I don't think he is 100% a lock. I think he has one of the highest selling jerseys in the NFL right now. I think that sometimes plays a part. Popularity. I hate to say it but it does often times, especially in the eyes of owners. But, you don't draft a guy in the third round and cut him," Palmer said.

Palmer did continue on and say that he thinks Sanders will make the roster, but he's not 100 percent sold on it.

"I think one of the two of Kenny Pickett or Joe Flacco will make the time. There's no advantage between the two veterans, I don't think they're both here. I think Shedeur is not a lock to make the roster. Do I think he does? Yes."

Throughout his college career, Sanders put up impressive numbers. He has already started turning heads in Cleveland with his performance early on in rookie minicamp and to start OTA's.

Even though starting strong is a good thing, he will need to continue that strong showing in training camp and the preseason.

Kevin Stefanski and the Browns are not going to show favoritism in this quarterback competition. Cleveland has to find a legitimate starting quarterback, both for the 2025 season and beyond. His job will depend on it, as will the job of general manager Andrew Berry.

It seems likely that Sanders will make the roster, but right now that is far from a guarantee. He will have to earn it.
