Five things learned as Manchester United win 3-1 against Hong Kong

Manchester United have won their second game on the post-season tour of Asia after recording a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong this afternoon.

After Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat against ASEAN All-Stars on Wednesday, the Red Devils recorded a win against Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium.

Casemiro thought he had given United an early lead in the fifth minute, but his headed finish from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick was flagged offside.

In cooler conditions than were experienced midweek in Malaysia, United dominated the early stages of the first half before conceding the opener after 18 minutes when Juninho breezed past Godwill Kukonki before driving his low effort past Tom Heaton.

United’s tempo dropped significantly after going behind, but Amorim named a completely different starting eleven for the second half, including Ayden Heaven, Amad Diallo, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

It took just four minutes for the half-time changes to make a difference, with Chido Obi finishing after a terrific turn inside the box before bending his effort to the right side of the goalkeeper.

Mason Mount made a difference on the pitch with his delivery, and United had many chances to take advantage of that. The referee denied the England international a stonewall penalty with 15 minutes left on the clock.

United finally took advantage of Mount’s creative spark when his cross found Obi lurking inside the box, only for the 17-year-old to send his header into the back of the net. It was enough to give United a win to wrap up a mixed tour.

Heaven also scored his first senior goal for the club with a header in stoppage time following a brilliant cross from Amad.

The second half performance was exactly what United needed to get a much-needed victory on the board. There was a marked improvement on the performance from Wednesday.

With the 2025 post-season tour of Asia now over, Ineos will hope that it will bring in around £8 million for the club.

The United first team can now enjoy their holidays, while some will be called for international duty in June.

Tom Heaton caught napping

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Heaton in action for United, and perhaps the reason for that was on show in Hong Kong when he flapped at Juninho’s shot for the opening goal.

Some might say Heaton can be excused for napping due to the shortage of games he’s been given at United, but it looks like he will be given a new contract and kept next season.

It doesn’t fill us with much confidence in our third-choice goalkeeper, so hopefully the Red Devils avoid another season of injuries.

Both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir were below par when called upon last during a turbulent campaign.

Jonny Evans’ final appearance for Manchester United

Jonny Evans started in Hong Kong for what will be his final appearance for United.

The 37-year-old, who re-joined the club in 2023, will leave United when his contract expires at the end of June.

The former Northern Ireland international must decide whether to search for a new club or hang up his boots.

Final game for Jonny Evans, 37, today. He’s ready to hang his boots up.

537 competitive professional club games and another 107 for Norn Ireland.

Man Utd, Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, West Brom, Leicester City.

15 trophies.

Just missed out of 6 Ballon d’Ors.

Top lad.

Evans was replaced at half-time.

Harry Amass made the most of a difficult situation

On the left flank, Harry Amass had a busy first half, pushing high in his wing-back position. Hong Kong couldn’t pin United back in the opening stages, which allowed Amorim’s men to push forward.

This allowed Amass and Jayden Kamason to get into forward positions, which is what Amorim wants from his side, playing in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

The one negative from his performance is that he didn’t unlock Alejandro Garnacho in the final third, but that is made more difficult by the likelihood of the Argentine’s head being elsewhere at the moment.

Shea Lacey looks a real talent

Amorim gave minutes to several youngsters against Hong Kong, including Shea Lacey, who showcased his ability on the ball, albeit in a brief cameo against weaker opposition.

The winger moved impressively with the ball and showed close control with a low centre of gravity, which troubled the opposition in the first half.

The 18-year-old was replaced by Tyler Fletcher after 27 minutes but he can now reflect on a positive post-season tour, at least on an individual note.

We hope Lacey gets plenty of minutes to prove himself on the pre-season tour later this summer.

Chido Obi shows Rasmus Hojlund how to finish

The post-season tour was another chance for Rasmus Hojlund to show his worth in a United shirt, but the Dane failed on that front.

Hojlund had chances to score in the first half but fluffed his lines each time.

United Academy graduate Obi wasted no time showing Hojlund how to take a chance inside the box when he punished Hong Kong just four minutes after coming off the bench. It was his first senior goal for United, although he must wait a bit longer for his first goal in a competitive senior match.

The youngster continued to get into some great positions, and he completed a brace after a stunning Mount cross in the 82nd minute. The young striker sent a glancing header past the Hong Kong goalkeeper to complete the comeback.

These are concerning times for Hojlund. If he doesn’t turn it around quickly, Obi will be taking his place in the pecking order at United and Denmark.

Obi was rightly given the man of the match award after the match.
