Leicester City may be relying on Manchester United to firm up their interest in Mads Hermansen if they want to sell the goalkeeper this summer.
City’s number one is expected to leave in the transfer window with the club needing to adjust to a reduced budget in the Championship, and with Hermansen one of the few players in their squad who can generate decent profit.
Hermansen underwent groin surgery four games before the end of the season in order to ensure he’s fit in time for pre-season. However, it also means the injury cannot be a barrier to a move away.
If City want to use Hermansen to raise funds, they need a suitor. But potential destinations are being closed off.
Brentford had been named as one of the clubs interested in Hermansen, and with a prominent Denmark contingent already in place at the Gtech Community Stadium.
But their attentions have turned to Liverpool’s back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in recent days they seek a replacement for Mark Flekken, who looks to be heading to Bayer Leverkusen.
Elsewhere, Chelsea, interested in Hermansen last summer, may not be in the market for a goalkeeper this time around.
There have been contrasting reports over Chelsea’s summer transfer plans and whether a new number one is on the list, but it’s seems possible they will stick with their current options, including Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, and Djordje Petrovic, who will be returning to Stamford Bridge after a loan spell at Strasbourg.
But Man United could still be in the hunt for a goalkeeper. It was reported by the Telegraph this week that they have watched Hermansen and Antwerp’s Senne Lammens with Andre Onana’s future in doubt.
The Cameroonian has made a number of high-profile mistakes this season after failing to keep out Brennan Johnson’s bundled effort in the Europa League final, he was left out of the squad for Man United’s final Premier League game, with Altay Bayindir starting.
Signed for £6.5m from Brondby two summers ago, there’s a hope that Hermansen could now attract bids as high as £25m.
If City sell the 24-year-old, they will owe a cut of profits to Brondby, who included a sell-on clause in his deal.
City have already said goodbye to two goalkeepers this summer with Daniel Iversen and Danny Ward leaving on free transfers, the former joining Preston.
So in the event Hermansen leaves, City would need to dip into the transfer market for a new goalkeeper, but not necessarily a new number one, with Jakub Stolarczyk potentially ready to take over.
