Ruben Amorim speaks on Bruno Fernandes departure

Manchester United’s dismal 2024/25 season ended with a bittersweet 3-1 victory in Hong Kong, giving the club a slight lift after finishing 15th in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim is set to remain at the club despite the underwhelming campaign, with the summer expected to usher in one of the biggest overhauls in United’s recent history.

With Champions League football out of reach and strict Financial Fair Play regulations in play, the club is under pressure to generate funds through player sales.

Saudi Arabian sides have been ramping up efforts to tempt top Premier League names, with Manchester United among the most heavily targeted clubs.

Bruno Fernandes has emerged as a headline name for a possible Saudi switch, with Al-Hilal reportedly putting forward a mammoth offer worth £200 million over three years.

Amid the growing speculation, United manager Ruben Amorim spoke after the final whistle in Hong Kong, after he was asked if he thinks Bruno Fernandes will leave Manchester United:

“I don’t think so.

“I don’t know for sure but nobody knows.

“I think he wants to stay.”

“He is saying no to a lot of things,” Amorim said.

Amorim continued by saying, “I talk to him and when you talk to someone, you feel if he wants to stay.

“He knows what we are doing.

“Every time I talk to him, I have the feeling he want to continue, but you never know.”

While the manager’s response wasn’t definitive, it suggested that Fernandes is yet to commit to any deal despite serious financial temptation from the Saudi Pro League.

Amorim was asked if United could reject the offer Al-Hilal are prepared to pay for his star man and he said, “Yes, we can find other ways to make money.”

Al-Hilal’s reported £100 million bid hinges on Fernandes agreeing to personal terms.

The 29-year-old has remained tight-lipped, but talks between his representatives and Al-Hilal have already taken place.

Fernandes’ importance to United has never been in doubt, having been the team’s most consistent performer in an otherwise forgettable campaign.

But with Ruben Amorim needing funds to rebuild, and the club under pressure to comply with profit and sustainability rules, a sale could prove financially strategic.

United fans now face an anxious wait to see if their talisman will lead the next chapter or be the latest casualty of a new era at Old Trafford.
